Assignment 11
Poster Triptich
For this assignment, the deliverables are the same, but for your brief you could choose one of the following two assignments. Each assignment tasks you to create a poster tryptych (3 18x24" posters); they should stand on their own, and work a series sharing a system or visual language. At least one of the three posters must be a moving poster, which is animated in some way. Week one we will present the posters as printed pieces at full scale, and week two will focus on motion.
Option A: Film Screening
Create a poster series for a three-day film screening at the SVA theater. Your goal is to choose a genre, theme or auteur, decide the three films to screen, and create three posters that express the films at your screening. Your posters should be conceived as a tryptych (3 18x24" posters); they should stand on their own, and work a series sharing a system or visual language.
At least one of your posters must be a moving poster, which is animated in some way.
All imagery must be original photography, illustration, or constructed form. I would strongly suggest choosing an auteur filmmaker as a starting point. Someone like:
Directors:
Paul Thomas Anderson
Jordan Peele
Sofia Coppola
Wong Kar-wai
David Lynch
Ari Aster
Stanley Kubrick
Spike Lee
Michael Mann
Deliverables:
3 posters, 18x24", full bleed
Option B: This is Water
Read or listen to This is Water by David Foster Wallace. The phrase “This is water” refers to the idea that the most obvious realities are often the hardest to see. Create a poster Triptich that explores the three worlds Foster Wallace explores, with specific restrictions:
Poster Themes:
1. Type-dominant: internal voice / cognition
2. Image-dominant: external world / environment
3. Balanced type & image = awareness / integration
Deliverables:
3 posters, 18x24", full bleed
Deliverables Week 1 (GC)
- Print your three posters 18x24"
- Present your films or posters and explain the underlying theme
Deliverables Week 2 (FC)
Present your three posters digitally as a Figma Slides or Figma prototype. Show these posters as a triptych and include your moving poster(s) in the sequence. Add a link to your Figma prototype to this Google Doc (make sure it is shared public so we can access the prototype).
