Assignment 03
Expressive Form: Book Design
Continue to refine your publication design. Focus your efforts on your typesetting, pacing and structure. Revise your front and back cover.
Make sure your book has a system. Finalize your margins and consider how the publication is working as a whole. Consider supplemental content if you would like to bulk up your book.
To summarize, in your publication you should have 50 black and white compositions, “The Crystal Goblet” typeset, and a front cover & back cover. Print your publication to scale, black & white in sequence. This will allow us to flip through your book in order. Bind your pages loosely with binder clips.
Background
Jeffery Keedy, born 1957, is an American graphic designer, type designer, writer and educator. He is notable as an essayist and contributor to books and periodicals on graphic design. In his essay “The Rules of Typography According to Crackpots Experts” Keedy critiques modernity and Warde's all or nothing approach.
The first thing one learns about typography and type design is that there are many rules and maxims. The second is that these rules are made to be broken. And the third is that “breaking the rules” has always been just another one of the rules.
