Assignment 04
Site Specific Typography

You’ll be assigned specific latitude and longitude coordinates. Using only typography, send a message at this specific location. Your message should communicate something to the passerby. Your typography should be printed, constructed or projected by any means necessary. It should not be permanent.

Timeline

Week 8—10.22.19
Documentation & Concepts
For class discussion create a PDF presentation fully documenting your location and planning at least two concepts. Visit your location and spend at minimum an hour in the area. Take photographs, make notes, observe the mundane. The longer you stay at the location, the more it will reveal itself. Let your observations define your message and goal. Your documentation of the location should be coherent, make connections and show us what you find interesting. Read this excerpt from Learning From Las Vegas, by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Steven Izenour as an example of how a location can be observed through a critical lense.
Bring in at least two concepts you would consider executing. Explain what you want to say, and how you want to say it. Consider your location and how the message is interacting with the environment. Context is just as important as design. At minumum show…
120 pages of photos & observations from your location
2At least two concepts with the following—
3A digital sketch or flat vector of your typography
4A 3D schematic (c4d, psd, Ai, Sketch Up, etc.)
5Example of materials, either physical or digital
62 renderings in–situation, at your location

Week 9—10.29.19
Production
Create your typography and bring this experiment to class fully constructed.

Week 10—11.5.19
Execution & Mini-Site
Between this week and next bring your typography to your site. Photograph it in–situation. Take images, video, and attempt to document people interacting with your message. Use a high quality camera, this documentation is a key component to this assignments execution.
Create a website housing your documentation. This will need to be designed in relation to your typographic experiment. Decide how to present your documentation so it feels considered. If you have experience coding, develop the site yourself. If not, consider using Persona for a simple one–pager or Cargo for a more complex system.

Week 11—11.12.19
Final Mini-Site
Take the feedback from last week and refine your website, finishing your documentation.

still stunned after witnessing the final, harrowing night of jenny holzer’s “vigil”. utterly horrific stories from survivors of gun violence—originally captured by the excellent team at @everytown— were projected at rockefeller center for three nights. i’ve never felt such stillness in midtown as vivid scenes of brutality and hate filled the plaza. our country accepts this daily slaughter of its own citizens as commonplace with our government’s cowardly inaction. thank you jenny holzer thank you @creativetime thank you @everytown for giving these survivors such a powerful platform to tell their stories. now do mitch mcconnell’s house.
