Assignment 03
Portfolio: Editing & Documentation
The first step to designing your portfolio is editing. Your job this week is to critically evaluate and organize your work. Create a 5 minute presentation outlining all the graphic design work from your sophomore year (so far).
Document your work by photographing, scanning, or rendering your final pieces. Gather sketches, previous versions, documentation and so forth to walk us through the process of each project. Include projects from this class as well as your others. Include everything, unless you know it is a project you would rather not showcase in your portfolio.
Create a PDF presentation in Indesign. This can also be the starting point for your portfolio design for the end of the semester. Include an Index (table of contents with project names and page numbers) and title page (name of project and instructor) for each project. Although this is not the emphasis of this week exercise, get a head start by thinking about your system for your portfolio PDF. Consider typographic hierarchy, grids, folios, etc.
Our meetings will be one-on-one this week. Sign up for a timeslot here.
Pentagram
does a fantastic job of distilling their concepts down into digestible paragraphs of text. Their photography and presentation of physical objects is clean and unobtrusive, while showing off the object quality of their design. Link
David Rudnik
scans his work throughout his entire portfolio. This has an even, flat presentation and gives emphasis on the details. It also creates a unifying style from project to project. Link
Vance Wellenstein
photographs his work in unique settings with special lighting, props and colorful backgrounds. These photographs amplify a certain aesthetic or design decision from the project itself. Link
