Assignment 01
Color

Week I —Listen to Brian Eno’s seminal album “Another Green World”. For this assignment, choose an instrumental track and create 25 completely different abstract, organic or geometric visuals that communicate the songs overall tone and feeling.
This visual must only be created with color: no representational images, no typography. The visual must be analog, the computer can’t be used as a tool for this assignment.
You’re to work in a square format, 12.375×12.375". Each compositions should exemplify one design principles explored in the first semester. This, along with a theme, mood or feeling, should be the driving force in your composition.

Example Mediums
1. Colored Paper
2. Colored Pencil / Pastel
3. Paint
4. Collage

Elligable Tracks
1. Sky Saw
2. Over Fire Island
3. In Dark Trees
4. The Big Ship
5. Another Green World
6. Sombre Reptiles
7. Little Fishes
8. Becalmed
9. Zawinul/Lava
10. Spirits Drifting

Deliverables, 1.21.19
25 abstract compositions, 12.375×12.375"

Week 2 —Complete a record package for the single you’ve chosen from week 1. Use your color studies from week 1 as a jumping off point. Download the template provided to create a to scale record mock-up.
At minimum you must design the front cover, back cover, spine and LP labels. All information within the template must be accounted for in your design. Take care to consider hierarchy of information. You can only use the Univers type family provided.
A two panel design is the minimum, but you’re free to push the boundaries of the packaging materials. Should there be a booklet or fold out poster that comes with the package? Do you think a gate fold would work better with your concept? Consider printing methods as well. Die cuts, embosses, special papers & inks are all potential solutions to add depth to your design.

Deliverables, 1.21.19
Record mock-up, front & back covers and spine (minimum)

“While it might be obvious why stop signs are painted red (alert, danger, there will be blood if you ignore this), most color schemes are harder to interpret so directly. This leaves us with an art form that, like graphic design in general, is both objective and subjective.”

Inspiration
My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is the first collaborative album by Brian Eno and David Byrne, released in February 1981. It integrates sampled vocals and found sounds, African and Middle Eastern rhythms, and electronic music techniques. It was recorded prior to Eno and Byrne's work on the Talking Heads album Remain in Light (1980), but sample clearance problems delayed its release by several months.
The original package design was created by Peter Saville. The cover image was created by pasting small cutout humanoid shapes onto a monitor and pointing a camera at it to create video feedback, infinitely multiplying the shapes: "Somehow, despite it being very techie, these techniques also seemed analogous to what we were doing on the record. It was funky as well as being techie. Extremely lo-tech, actually, and not what you were supposed to do with a TV set."
