Assignment 03
Image

Visual rhetoric is a form of communication that uses images to create meaning or construct an argument. You have been divided into 5 groups and your group has been assigned a topic. Your task is to create an image that visually summarizes and analyzes a complex idea, theory, or extended narrative in a single eye span. Absolutely no photo manipulation (no photoshopping), no typography, no hand-drawn illustration, and you cannot pull any images from the internet. You MUST create an image where at a first glance, anyone could understand the topic you are dealing with through the lens of a camera. Your topics are the following...
1. Police brutality
2. Gender fluidity
3. Cultural appropriation
4. Mental health
5. Ocean conservation

This is a portfolio worthy project, so please take the time to really think about the topic and what it means to you. DO RESEARCH. Look into non-profit organizations that deal with this certain issue and think about HOW you would like to shed light on your given topic through a lens. You are visual problem solvers. Solve this problem utilizing your unique voice, talent and skills as a designer.

Deliverables
Minimum 3 images
Printed as 11×17" vertical posters
Shot in high-res camera with one solid concept
DSLR cameras highly recommended
You can borrow cameras on the 5th floor of the DIC if you do not already own a camera
Or borrow a friend’s camera

Round 01
10.22.18

Bring in your images printed on 11×17" vertically. Minimum 3 images.

Round 02
10.29.18

What you brought into class in the first week should have been a near-complete image. Take this week to reshoot, revise, make any lighting refinements, and make it a high-quality image.

Things to consider
The lens of a camera is similar to that of an artboard in Illustrator. Think about composition, rule of thirds, scale… your design principles that you thought about over 100 times also applies to photography. Don’t just take 3 pictures and hope for the best. Take 20-30 and pick out what you think best represents your topic.
You can utilize found objects at toy stores, vintage shops, thrifts stores, 99 cent stores. Get your hands dirty. This is a fantastic opportunity to step away from the screen and make something with your hands. Build something out of clay, paper, props, etc.
